I can't stress how important it is to take a break from your diet and exercise routine. I was recently on holidays in Vanuatu, yes in the middle of my comp prep about 8 weeks out from the IFBB state titles in Perth. It was the most amazing experience.
My attitude is that I will not diet or worry about maintaining an exercise regime while I am on holidays as that would defeat the whole purpose of taking a break. I had started to reduce body fat about 5 weeks before I went on holidays by reducing my calorie intake (with controlled macro nutrients intake) and introducing cardio about 2-3 times per week. I managed to lose about 5kgs from my off-season weight before I left for Vanuatu.
Being in calorie deficit combined with training 1 – 2 times per day can put a lot of strain on your body and you may find yourself becoming fatigued and also having small niggly injuries. For example my shoulder occasionally gives me a bit of pain and sometimes my hips hurt from interval sprints. Given that I was in relatively good shape when I left I knew that I would be able to bounce back when I got home so I wasn't at all stressed. It's important to give yourself a break both mentally and physically.
As far as supplements go when I'm travelling it really depends what I'm doing at the time. Your body can become used to stimulants so on this holiday I decided to have a break from all stimulants and caffeine products and I introduced them again when I got home. I found this gave me a massive kick start getting back into my comp prep. When I'm travelling for a competition or for work I take most of my supps with me. Protein for meals on the go, GH Blast to ensure that I get a good sleep, Xtend for intra-workout and Lipodrive (fat/burner combined pre-workout) and/ or Mesomorph 2.0 Pineapple which is my favourite pre-workout.
During my holiday my partner and I ate out at least once per day. The food was mainly French Cuisine so very rich, buttery and creamy……. but delicious!! I may have gone to a French Patisserie and ordered 6 different pastries, whoops !!! Hehe we did try to stay active with horse riding, kayaking and walking up and down the beautiful cascades etc. We also drank SO many coconuts they were only about 40 cents each from the markets and sweet and delicious. Coconut water is very nourishing for the body and contains electrolytes and essential minerals. I love it and it's something I will keep in my diet!
I was able to sleep approx 10 -12 hours a day which did absolute wonders for me. I was left feeling refreshed, healed and ready to take on the world again. Don't feel guilty about taking a break. Your body will thank you for it!!
Have a wonderful week everyone!!
